Rosacea is a common skin condition that affects as many as 1 in 20 people. Often times confused with acne, it primarily targets the central face and sometimes the eyelids. Two main rosacea symptoms include:

Understanding Rosacea Causes
There is no cure for rosacea, but there are many excellent treatments that can be prescribed by Los Angeles dermatologist, Dr. Brian Mekelburg. Sometimes treating the skin gently can avoid flare-ups. The use of a mild cleanser and avoidance of mechanical and chemical irritants are also very helpful for a red face.
Examples of mechanical irritants include:
- particle-containing scrubs,
- microdermabrasion, and
- even a coarse washcloth.
Examples of chemical irritants include:
- acidic preparations such as retinol, tretinoin (Retin-A), vitamin C, glycolic acid products, and salicylic acid and
- exposure to the sun.

Rosacea Treatment
For the stubborn cases, the use of prescription topical medications and, sometimes, oral antibiotics are necessary. These treatments are directed at the red bumps and pimples and can be used safely for extended periods.
There are new medications on the horizon for treatment of rosacea redness. In the meantime, laser treatment of the spider veins and background redness is the gold standard. Such laser treatment is available in our office.
